Rosatom will begin pouring the first concrete for the foundation of the new Paks-2 nuclear power plant after receiving permission from the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority, according to Tatyana Terentyeva, Deputy Director General of the State Corporation.
We are currently awaiting permission from the Hungarian regulator to pour the first concrete. We hope this will happen in the near future. The permit is necessary to start construction work directly in the active phase, although preparations are already underway at the site, including the construction of key facilities.
Project «Paks-2» is strategically important for Russian-Hungarian relations and serves as a powerful incentive for their development. Currently, about 300 Russian specialists are working on the construction of two new power units, and their number will increase.
Currently, there is an operating nuclear power plant in Paks, built by Soviet specialists in the 1980s. The station provides half of all electricity produced and a third of electricity consumption in Hungary.
The commissioning of VVER-1200 nuclear reactors in the early 2030s will increase the capacity of the nuclear energy complex in Paks from 2,000 MW to 4,400 MW. The share of electricity generated from nuclear power plants will reach 70%.
Earlier www1.ru reported that Hungary is accelerating the construction of the Paks-2 NPP.
