Pilot industrial operation of Russia's first gigafactory of lithium-ion batteries will begin near Kaliningrad by the end of 2025. The plant is located in the Neman district and is part of the Rosatom State Corporation, according to the regional government, citing Governor Aleksey Besprozvannykh.
According to the head of the region, the launch of the gigafactory is of strategic importance for the region's economy: the production of electric vehicles and batteries will be concentrated in the Kaliningrad region, which will create new jobs and strengthen the region's industrial potential. To support industrial investment projects, an additional 250 million rubles will be allocated from the reserve fund of the Russian government in 2025.
The first stage of the gigafactory is designed to produce lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 4 GWh per year, which will provide batteries for up to 50,000 electric vehicles. In the future, it is possible to expand production to 14 GWh if demand is confirmed.
The enterprise will create about 900 jobs (up to 1.5 thousand, taking into account related industries), become a major taxpayer, and will also contribute to the development of education, science, technology and industrial cooperation.
The energy storage systems project is being implemented by Rosatom's industry integrator, Renera LLC.
