The head of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, signed an important order that opens a new chapter in the history of the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant. The State Corporation is starting the construction of the eighth power unit, which will be equipped with a modern generation 3+ water-cooled power reactor. Its installed capacity will be 1200 MW, which will significantly increase the overall performance of the station.
Currently, four power units with a total capacity of 3778 MW are operating at the Novovoronezh NPP. However, in the coming years, two of them are expected to be decommissioned, scheduled for 2032 and 2036. After the completion of the new reactor, the total capacity of the station will be 3561.3 MW, which will ensure a stable energy supply to the region.
Work on the new power unit project began two years ago, and in 2023, the area of Novovoronezh was expanded by 1700 hectares by annexing land from the neighboring Kashirsky and Ostrogozhsky districts. The expansion creates additional opportunities for the implementation of large-scale projects. The director of the Novovoronezh NPP, Vladimir Povarov, said that preliminary work and design of the new unit have already begun, which indicates a serious approach to the implementation of this project.
Thus, the commissioning of the eighth power unit will be an important step in the modernization and development of nuclear energy in Russia, providing a reliable and environmentally friendly energy supply for future generations.
