330 GW to be Generated by 2050: Russia Increases Energy Capacity with Focus on Construction of Nuclear, Thermal, Hydroelectric, and Renewable Energy Power Plants

The country will create standards for renewable energy sources and a certification system for \"green\" energy

The country plans to introduce 106 GW of new generating capacity, including nuclear, thermal, and renewable energy facilities. This was announced by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak in an authored column for the journal \"Energy Policy.\"

By 2050, the installed capacity of power plants will increase by 78 GW compared to 2023 and will amount to 330 GW. The introduction of new facilities will include 26 GW of hydroelectric power plants, pumped storage power plants, solar and wind power plants — 50% more than in 2023.

It is also planned to build 50 GW of thermal power plants and 30 GW of nuclear power units, which is equivalent to an increase of 29%. The share of nuclear generation in the total structure of electricity production will grow to 25%.

The development of the energy sector envisages the introduction of new technological solutions, including medium and small capacity power units, as well as the launch of closed nuclear fuel cycle technologies. Russia will maintain its leading position in the global nuclear energy market.

Against the backdrop of the global transition to clean energy, the country will continue to improve the regulatory framework in the field of renewable energy sources. It is planned to create a system of national standards in the field of renewable energy, developed taking into account the best international practices.

The development of infrastructure for the certification of \"green\" electricity and energy storage systems is planned. One of the priorities will be the expansion of exports of equipment and services in the field of renewable generation.
