Cement Instead of Roofing Felt: UrFU Improves Concrete Waterproofing Technology

Dry sprinkling method is designed to replace traditional rolled materials

Researchers at the Ural Federal University (UrFU) have patented a new technology and device for waterproofing foundations, which can significantly reduce the cost of construction work. The dry sprinkling method is designed to replace traditional rolled materials.

The new technology involves applying a special cement mixture to the reinforcing cage before pouring concrete. During the hardening of the concrete, this layer increases its water resistance several times, creating waterproofing inside the structure itself. For uniform distribution of the mixture, scientists have developed a special device with two-tiered blades, protected by RF patent No. 2839100.

It works like this: while the concrete is gaining strength, the water-cement ratio changes at the contact area between the sprinkling and the concrete mixture, due to which the water resistance grade of the lower protective layer of concrete significantly increases and the necessary waterproofing layer is created inside the structure itself.

According to experts' calculations, the savings when using the method on a foundation slab with an area of 1000 m² will be about 140 thousand rubles compared to single-layer rolled insulation and up to 400 thousand rubles compared to double-layer. The new technology also increases the reliability and durability of waterproofing.

Currently, the UrFU Institute has reached an agreement with the development company "Brusnika" to test the technology at one of its construction sites. The technology has already successfully passed laboratory tests on models of foundation slabs in Yekaterinburg.

The dry sprinkling method has been known since the 1960s, but has not become widespread due to difficulties with uniform application of the mixture. The development of Ural scientists solves this problem.
