Five hydraulic structures (HSS) are planned to be built in the Astrakhan region by 2030. This was reported by the environmental management and environmental protection service of the region. The project, worth 300 million rubles, aims to improve water supply for almost 500 thousand residents and ensure safety during floods.
The construction of culverts is scheduled for 2026 in the territories of Ikryaninsky, Limansky and Narimanovsky districts. After commissioning, the facilities will be transferred to the balance of local district administrations.

As specified in the department, the function of the HSS is to open and close the gates in a timely manner to regulate the flow of water during floods. This will create guaranteed water supply sources and improve the flooding of the region, in particular, in the zone of the western substeppe ilmens.
The project documentation was developed within the framework of the federal project "Rehabilitation of the Volga" of the national project "Ecology", which is now continuing as "Water of Russia". The need for new facilities is associated with the shallow floods observed in the region in recent years. They lead to shallowing of water bodies and negatively affect the Volga ecosystem.
