Airplanes in Russia will stop rusting: a new method of anti-corrosion treatment of aircraft steel has been found

The treatment protects steel from rapid destruction by seawater

Russian physicists have found a new method of increasing the anti-corrosion resistance of VNS-5 aircraft steel by surface treatment with argon and chromium ion beams.

This method protects steel from rapid destruction by seawater, as well as secretions from microbes, fungi and moss, the Center for Scientific Communication of MIPT reported. The procedure reduced the corrosion current by approximately 7.8 times, while chemical passivation changed this indicator only slightly compared to a clean, polished sample of aircraft steel.

The result is impressive. Prior to this, we had been processing industrial steels and alloys in our laboratory for many years, but the effect was either short-lived or insignificant.

Scientists explained that some grades of aircraft steel are used not only in the aerospace industry, but also for the manufacture of components for marine vessels, including bolts, anchors and other structural elements.

Earlier www1.ru reported that the MS-21 aircraft flew for the first time to test navigation systems as a regular aircraft.
