Iranian authorities have turned their attention to Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM). The country wants to urgently revise its military strategy, with an emphasis on modernizing the Air Force and air defense systems to restore national security.
Iran wants to find an alternative to the Chinese HQ-9 SAM systems, which are closer to the S-300 in terms of performance. At the same time, the country has also intensified negotiations with China on the purchase of Chengdu J-10C multirole fighters, considering them as a more affordable alternative to Russian Su-35 and MiG-35 aircraft.
Negotiations with China are facilitated by the lifting of US sanctions on the purchase of Iranian oil on June 24, 2025, which opens up opportunities for oil barter.
Characteristics of the S-400 SAM System:
- Target detection range — 600 km
- Speed of targets engaged — 4800 m/s
- Number of simultaneously engaged targets — 36
- Number of simultaneously guided missiles — 72
- Engagement range — 250 km
- Maximum target engagement altitude — 35,000 m
Earlier www1.ru reported that a foreign country wanted to purchase the latest S-500 Prometheus air defense systems.
