Scientists from the HSE University Centre for Language and Brain conducted a large-scale analysis of 18 scientific papers devoted to digital applications for the rehabilitation of patients with aphasia. The results of the study, published in the journal NeuroRehabilitation, identified key factors that increase the effectiveness of such programs.
Traditional rehabilitation methods require lengthy work with speech therapists, but with the development of technology, "serious games" (SG) are coming to the fore - applications that combine game mechanics with therapeutic tasks.
The analysis showed that the greatest progress is achieved with:
- Automatic feedback - instant error correction speeds up learning.
- Variety of tasks - mini-games for naming objects, composing sentences, and recognizing speech prevent the "plateau effect."
- Long-term use - the optimal course lasts from 3 months.
- Combination with doctor's appointments - specialist control increases motivation.
In our center, we are working on creating a game for the rehabilitation of patients with aphasia. A review of studies will help test it in the most effective mode, and implement the functions necessary for successful operation. Existing applications often have few gamification elements; in fact, they are electronic collections of exercises. We will try to correct this shortcoming in order to increase user involvement.
Aphasia is a disorder in which a person loses the ability to speak and understand the speech of others. This is due to damage to certain areas of the brain responsible for speech. The main causes of aphasia are stroke, head injuries, inflammatory processes in the brain, tumors, and dementia.
