Powerful magnetic storms due to a coronal hole on the Sun are expected in the coming days

Prolonged geomagnetic disturbances will begin on June 25; it will not be possible to avoid them completely

In the coming days, magnetic storms may occur on Earth, caused by a large coronal hole observed on the Sun-Earth line. This was reported by specialists from the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI RAS and ISZF SB RAS.

The coronal hole is moving from east to west and has already reached the line connecting our planet to the Sun. Its uniqueness lies in its location: the hole is located directly on the equator, which allows it to influence the Earth. Streams of fast solar wind will reach our planet within 2-3 days. Scientists believe that it will not be possible to completely avoid the effects of the coronal hole. According to their forecasts, prolonged geomagnetic disturbances will begin on June 25.

Coronal holes are regions in the Sun's corona where magnetic field lines are in an open state. This is why solar plasma is rapidly sent into outer space. Emissions can affect the Earth's magnetic field, causing magnetic storms. The latter affect technology and human health. Scientists continue to study the mechanisms of the emergence of coronal holes and their impact on our planet.
