Hits the Wallet: "Tor-M2" SAM System Proposed to be Equipped with Cheaper SAMs to Destroy UAVs

The system also needs new Ka-band AESA radars

Updated military anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) «Tor-M2» urgently need to be adapted to intercepting strike copters of «free drop» and kamikaze drones with an ultra-small effective reflecting surface (RCS). This opinion was expressed by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.

Thus, he reacted to the statement of analyst Igor Korotchenko that further modernization of the «Tor-M2» should go towards the development of a new generation of small-sized anti-aircraft guided missiles (SAMs) aimed at destroying aircraft-type strike drones.

It should be a small, cheap and mass-produced SAM.

Damantsev added that the current radar detectors of «Tor-M2» are not always able to detect free-drop copters with an RCS of less than 0.02 sq. m and ultra-small FPV drones.

For this, the «Tor-M2» can be retrofitted with 4 fixed Ka-band AESA and MWIR sensors, providing all-aspect coverage and detection of targets with an RCS of thousandths of a square meter and heat-contrast targets.
