GAZ Patents Its Iconic Cars: GAZ-24 "Volga", GAZ-66 "Shishiga", and GAZ-AA "Polutorka"

The use of images of Soviet cars in games, toys, and souvenirs without the company's consent is prohibited

GAZ Group has protected the images of its iconic cars from unauthorized use and copying by obtaining patents for models including the GAZ-24 "Volga", GAZ-66 "Shishiga", GAZ-AA "Polutorka", and others. The documents prohibit the use of images of these cars to create figurines, toys, scale models, and NFT pictures without the manufacturer's consent.

The security documentation applies to the GAZ-24 "Volga" — a mass-produced Soviet business sedan from 1967–1985, the GAZ-66 army truck produced from 1964 to 1999, the GAZ M-1 "Emka" passenger car from 1936, the ZIM GAZ-12 limousine from 1949–1959, and the legendary "Polutorka" GAZ-AA, produced from 1932 to 1942.

According to the patents, it is forbidden to use images of these cars for the production of souvenirs, keychains, cases for smartphones and tablets, as well as to include them in computer games and other goods without GAZ's permission.

Illegal copying of Soviet models is widespread. In 2020, GAZ Group won a lawsuit against the online store Wildberries, which sold collectible models of the GAZ-21 and "Tiger" made in China. However, in April 2025, the company lost a lawsuit demanding a ban on the sale of a "Sobol" minibus copying design in the "Lenta" hypermarket.
