Russia Revives Development of Supersonic Airliner and Long-Range "Flying Wing" Aircraft

Head of TsAGI, Sypalo, calls the flying wing concept a priority for domestic aviation

Specialists at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) are considering the concept of a long-range aircraft in an integrated "flying wing" and "lifting fuselage" configuration as a priority. This was announced by the General Director of TsAGI, Kirill Sypalo.

According to him, research data shows that the "flying wing" design is 15-20% more fuel-efficient than the currently used classical configurations.

Also, fundamental research has revived design studies of supersonic passenger aircraft with an acceptable level of sonic boom — a problem that could not be solved for many years since the times of Tu-144 and Concorde.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that the MC-21-300 aircraft consumes half the kerosene compared to the Tu-154M.
