T2, a Russian mobile operator, has implemented Voice over Wi-Fi technology in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Now, subscribers can make calls over Wi-Fi even where mobile communication is unavailable: in buildings with thick walls, basements, high-rise buildings, or while traveling abroad. The service is also available to residents of the Stavropol Territory and the Tambov Region.
In the coming months, the company plans to extend VoWiFi technology to all regions of presence.
In December 2024, T2 successfully completed the implementation of VoLTE technology in its regions of presence. After that, it began work on implementing another technology — Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), which allows making calls over Wi-Fi. The Tambov Region was chosen as a test region for launching VoWiFi. Successful testing in this region allowed T2 to launch VoWiFi in another region — the Stavropol Territory.
At the end of March, the VoWiFi option became available to residents of Moscow and the Moscow Region, and in early April — to St. Petersburg. In total, T2's VoWiFi technology has potentially become available to more than 33 million people. Since the beginning of March, more than 6 million calls have been made via Wi-Fi in the connected regions, of which 3.5 million were made in Moscow in the last two weeks.
The launch of VoWiFi technology was a logical continuation of our large-scale launch of VoLTE last year. We also expect the implementation of Voice over Wi-Fi in all regions of presence as soon as possible – within a few months. The new technology not only expands the experience of using stable voice communication, but also saves money when traveling in Russia and abroad, since minutes are used from the client's package without additional fees for this type of call.
VoWiFi allows using a regular Wi-Fi network to make calls when mobile communication is unavailable. This technology is especially useful for those who are in places with poor mobile coverage, for example, in basements of buildings, on the upper floors of high-rise buildings, or abroad. In such places, a Wi-Fi router is usually used to access the Internet.
To use Voice over Wi-Fi technology, you need to check whether your mobile device supports VoLTE and VoWiFi, and also make sure that these functions are activated in the device settings. Calls over VoWiFi are charged as regular voice calls, and no additional fee is charged for using the service.
