Tornado-S MLRS Underwent Combat Baptism in Tandem with 96L6-TsP Radar: A New Era of Counter-Battery Warfare

The system will calculate the positions of HIMARS at a distance of up to 210 km

The Russian multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) "Tornado-S" has undergone combat baptism in tandem with the new radar station (radar) 96L6-TsP. The complex will open a new milestone in counter-battery duels with the American HIMARS MLRS, said military analyst Yevgeny Damantsev.

According to him, the 96L6-TsP radar is designed to detect and track complex hypersonic ballistic targets and low-altitude cruise missiles with ultra-small effective reflecting surface (RCS) on Marching and descending branches of trajectories in the altitude range from 0.005 to 100 km. Targets with RCS of 0.01 sq. m are detected at a distance of about 65 - 75 km.

The product has undergone at least a software update in order to implement counter-battery mode of operation. A similar update could have been applied to and standard all-altitude detectors 96L6 from the S-400 air defense system, also operating in the C (G/H) wave range.
