A domestic installation, the ELV-6 stand, is used for the work

Scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University and the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics SB RAS are creating new technologies for creating thermal barrier coatings for structural elements of gas turbine engines (GTE) of aircraft. We are talking about new materials based on oxide ceramics with unique strength and heat-shielding properties — they are applied to the blades of power plants.

Researchers have managed to achieve an ultra-high rate of nanosynthesis of nanoceramics in the range from 1 to 10 seconds. Such ceramics are created using synthesis technologies, however, existing methods took a long time.

The process of solid-phase synthesis of high-entropy ceramics lasts tens of hours and includes many additional energy-intensive stages. Russia uses a non-standard approach to the synthesis of nanoceramics — heating with fast electrons in air on an industrial accelerator.

A unique domestic installation is used for the work — the ELV-6 Stand, on which a powerful continuous electron beam is emitted into the atmosphere. The characteristics of the beam allow synthesizing the material in 1 second. Thanks to this, it is possible to create a monolithic material consisting of a single chemical compound.

Nanoceramic materials make it possible to achieve previously unattainable properties — ultra-high strength, high heat resistance, low thermal conductivity, colossal dielectric constant, superionic conductivity, strong anisotropic coefficient of thermal expansion, strong absorption of electromagnetic waves.
