The Russian Navy (VMF) has begun to effectively use Kalibr cruise missiles of submarine basing from diesel-electric submarines. This was announced by Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov.

The head of the department expressed confidence that the skill of the personnel and the qualitative renewal of the submarine fleet will allow to effectively respond to modern challenges and threats.
Kalibr (NATO classification SS-N-27 Sizzler) are cruise missiles developed and manufactured by the Novator Design Bureau in Yekaterinburg (part of the Almaz-Antey Air Defense Concern).
The range of Kalibrs is more than 2000 km, the mass of the warhead is 500 kg. Missiles of this type have low radar signature and, due to terrain following at extremely low altitudes, are difficult to detect by any air defense systems.
