Technology for obtaining useful nanomaterials from toxic waste created in Novosibirsk

New nanofibers can be used to modify polymers

The Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences presented an innovative method for producing carbon nanofibers from toxic trichloroethylene. This was reported by the press service of the university.

 This disposal method is an alternative to incineration or burial, which cause great harm to the environment. The resulting carbon nanofibers can be used both to improve the physical and mechanical properties of polymers and lubricants, and as a catalyst carrier.

A tubular reactor is used to obtain nanomaterials. When heated to 550-650°C and passing a mixture of trichloroethylene, argon and hydrogen, scientists obtain carbon nanofibers. They can be used as carriers for catalysts or to improve the properties of polymers.

Also, our material turned out to be promising for cleaning water from chloroaromatic contaminants - it has a high specific surface area and porosity. Another area under development is additives to lubricating materials.
