Scientists at Sirius University are working on creating an artificial 3D tumor model. This will help develop new cancer treatments, the federal territory's press service reported.
The Sirius University of Science and Technology is developing innovative 3D tumor models that significantly advance research in oncology and open new horizons in the search for effective cancer treatments.
Creating a detailed model of a tumor with its surrounding cellular environment will allow recreating the real conditions in which the development and spread of malignant neoplasms occur. This, in turn, opens new horizons in understanding these processes and contributes to the development of more advanced ways to combat this dangerous disease.
As part of a grant competition, a team of scientists is creating three-dimensional models of breast and brain cancer that accurately display the vascular system. These models will be used for preclinical testing of anti-tumor drugs that stimulate the patient's immune system.
"Thanks to their potential, such models are already being used by many research groups for both fundamental and translational research, and their use can significantly reduce the number of animal experiments, for example, in the field of oncology," the press service quotes Anna Nushtaeva, head of the youth research group at Sirius University.
In 2025, 1.14 billion rubles will be allocated to grant support for scientific projects at the Sirius educational center.
The Sirius University of Science and Technology was established in 2019 on the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The university is located on the territory of Sirius, which is located in a picturesque location on the Black Sea coast.
Recently, scientists from the Omsk State University named after F. M. Dostoevsky, the Omsk State Technical University, and the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences developed unique fluorescent dyes. These developments can be used to diagnose various diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and atherosclerosis.
