Scientists from the Dostoevsky Omsk State University, Omsk State Technical University, and the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences have created unique fluorescent dyes. These developments can be used to diagnose various diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and atherosclerosis, according to the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
The drug is cheaper than its imported counterparts, which are currently difficult to purchase in Russia. At the same time, it surpasses them in its selectivity.
We have developed a new fluorescent dye that allows selective staining of lipid droplets (which are contained in the cells of living organisms - ed.) in green. It does not exhibit toxic properties and can therefore be used in living cells.
The press service of the Ministry of Science and Education explained that lipid droplets play an important role in regulating metabolism and lipid accumulation in cells. Staining these droplets allows the detection of various pathologies in cells using a microscope. This, in turn, contributes to the diagnosis of socially significant diseases such as cancer, fatty liver disease, atherosclerosis, and type II diabetes.
Methods using fluorescent dyes are highly sensitive - about a thousand times higher than classical ones. Currently, the new drug is undergoing laboratory tests.
Fisyuk emphasized that the domestic dye is significantly cheaper than Western counterparts, which, moreover, are no longer supplied to Russia.
At the same time, our dye is more selective, as it does not stain other organelles (cellular structures - ed.). Thanks to this, the diagnostic picture is not blurred.
Earlier, scientists from the Ural Federal University developed an innovative test system that can detect cancer in its early stages. This method, based on blood analysis, is currently being tested for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
