Crews of Russian T-72B3M tanks increased the accuracy and grouping of fire by 20% due to the replacement of the 2A46M gun with the 2A46M-5. This was reported by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
He drew attention to the footage of the combat work of the armored vehicle crew that appeared on the Web. Unmanned aerial reconnaissance transmitted the coordinates of the detected target to the tankers, and they immediately advanced to a previously prepared closed position.
Thanks to the skill of the crew and the 20% higher grouping of fire of the 2A46M-5 gun compared to the earlier 2A46M gun, the target was destroyed by an accurate hit even in the absence of direct visibility of the target by firing semi-direct fire and implementing a flat trajectory of the ZOF26 high-explosive fragmentation projectile.
The 2A46M-5 gun was developed in 2005. The main methods of achieving higher characteristics were increasing the rigidity of the cantilever part of the barrel, improving the dynamic balance of the gun, tightening tolerances during the manufacture of the barrel, and an updated system for attaching the barrel to the cradle.
Like the previous weapons of the family, the 2A46M-5 gun is equipped with a smoothbore 125 mm caliber barrel 6 m long. The length of the charging chamber is 840 mm. Compared to the 2A46M gun, the accuracy of fire increased by 17-20%. The total dispersion when firing on the move decreased by 1.7 times.
