Unique Mortar Design Patented in Russia: Twice as Light as Traditional Models

The weapon was created using high-strength fiber composite materials

Scientists at the South Ural State University (SUSU) have patented a new mortar for the military, which is twice as strong and lighter than a traditional weapon made of metal alloys.

These characteristics will allow the military to move faster with bulky weapons during artillery shelling, said Marina Semashko, head of the ammunition and detonators department at the Polytechnic Institute of SUSU.

She noted that the barrel weighs the most in traditional mortars — about 20 kg. Scientists managed to make the mortar wall as thin as possible, but keep the barrel body rigid and strong. This was helped by banding the pipe with a fibrous high-strength composite material.

Thanks to this winding, the body will withstand the same pressures as a conventional steel mortar, but its mass will be much less. Instead of 20 kg, it will be much easier for a fighter to carry only about 10 kg.

The second heaviest part of the mortar is a metal plate weighing about 18 kg, against which the device's barrel rests. Experts suggested making the plate from engineering plastic, maintaining its standard size and rigidity, but making the support four times lighter.

Thanks to this solution, a fighter will be able to cope with the rapid movement of the device alone, which means that it becomes possible to reduce the combat crew from three or four people to two people.
