The Soviet long-range bomber-missile carrier Tu-22M can strike virtually"anywhere, anytime", while remaining beyond the reach of enemy air defense. This is according to military expert Brandon J. Weichert writing for The National Interest.
Russia, contrary to the expectations of Western analysts, is rearming its Cold War-era combat platforms. These include the Tu-22M, which carries Kh-22 and Kh-32 cruise missiles, and FAB 3000M-46.
Initially, these missiles were used to combat ships, but they were later modified for ground attacks.
The main advantage of the Tu-22M, according to Weichert, is its flight range. The crew of the bomber-missile carrier performs the mission while remaining outside the range of enemy air defense systems.
Tu-22M Characteristics:
- Crew - 4 people.
- Length - 42.4 m
- Wingspan - 34.3 m
- Height - 12.5 m
- Maximum speed - 2200 km/h.
- Flight range - up to 8000 km with refueling.
