The production of nanotubes, which are used in neurocomputer developments and medicine, can harm the environment. This was discovered by scientists from Russia, Iran, and Brazil; on the Russian side, scientists from Tomsk State University participated in the study. An article on the toxic effects of nanotubes has been published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

Carbon nanotubes are a modification of carbon that can be used for various purposes: from super-strong threads and superconductors to neurocomputer developments and nanopipettes. In 2022, the carbon nanotube market was estimated at $3.6 billion. The field of medicine is considered particularly promising.

Nanotubes adsorb both useful and harmful substances. A mixture of oxidized nanotubes and pesticides or antibiotics becomes even more toxic. In addition, nanotubes can enhance the absorption of harmful substances by the body. Nanoparticles enter water and organisms, interact with metals and pollutants, causing a toxic effect.

Scientists analyzed 53 studies on the toxicity of nanotubes. They found that the effect of nanotubes depends on the environment, the shape of the nanotubes, and the pollutants. To solve the problems, it is proposed to create a standardized scheme for analyzing the toxicity of mixtures. This will use the in silico method, which allows predicting the outcome of events without conducting an experiment. Creating simulations and experiments will help manage the risks associated with the spread of nanotubes.
