The development of the mixture for building tiles belongs to scientists from the Ufa State Petroleum Technological University (USPTU). It is remarkable not only for its environmental friendliness, but also for the fact that it will help give a second life to waste from industries in the Republic of Bashkortostan and neighboring regions.
In the manufacture of tiles for urban spaces, enterprises and factories, instead of concrete, which contains Portland cement and sand, USPTU proposes to use recycled materials remaining from the production of thermal insulation materials and metallurgical products. This is granulated slag remaining from the Chelyabinsk metallurgical enterprise "Mechel-Materials" and cupola dust from the Blagoveshchensk plant "Agidel", which produces mineral wool insulation.
Recycled materials are mixed in a solution of alkali, and as a result of chemical interaction, a durable concrete material is obtained. Cement, which produces a lot of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere during production, is not included in the composition of the tile using this technology. It is also not required to involve scarce natural raw materials in production.
Samples of tiles made from the new mixture have already passed tests for frost resistance, wear resistance, strength and durability and are ready for use in the urban environment. In order to use them at production sites and factories, the tiles still have to be tested for corrosion resistance in various chemical environments.
The research was carried out as part of the implementation of the Priority-2030 program of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia (the "Decarbonization Technologies" strategic project of the USPTU development program). Scientists have received patents for their development and published a number of articles about it in scientific journals included in the list of the Higher Attestation Commission, in Scopus and in Web of Science. But now they have to find a manufacturer who would engage in the serial production of tiles using this technology.
