Specialists from the Rosatom Scientific Institute have created a unique method for prospecting solid minerals based on registering the flow of cosmic muons at various depths in wells. For this purpose, a muon tomograph was created, the state corporation reported in its press service.
The device is capable of registering muons at depths of up to 1500 meters.
By placing muon tomograph detectors in several wells near the area of soil under investigation, after collecting data on the muon flux, a three-dimensional tomographic picture of the soil density distribution in the volume under investigation is constructed using the developed software. The muon tomograph detectors are created entirely on the territory of Russia, all detector nodes are developed and created by the project team's own efforts
The muon tomograph is convenient for transportation due to its modular design. The length of one module is less than 2.5 meters, and the weight is about 40 kilograms. The device will increase the efficiency of prospecting and estimating mineral reserves.
