Combat units of the Russian Aerospace Forces are receiving a batch of modernized long-range MiG-31BM interceptors. The fighters perform air defense and missile defense functions in aircraft- and missile-hazardous operational directions of the front.
The machines received powerful 8BM airborne radar complexes integrated into the updated Zaslon-AM weapon control system.
8BM radars are built on the basis of active-passive phased arrays, capable of detecting targets with an RCS of 3 m² at a distance of 320 km and 0.1 m² — 120 km.
The ammunition of the machines is represented by R-37M ultra-long-range air-to-air missiles and R-77-1 medium- and long-range missiles.
MiG-31BM is a modification of the MiG-31 interceptor fighter. The aircraft is equipped with new radar stations and a weapon control system. The fighter is capable of tracking up to ten and engaging six aerial targets simultaneously. The modernization of the MiG-31 to the MiG-31BM level began in 2008.
