David Adams, CEO of the Professional Legal Group AID, explained why fraudsters need the SNILS number. The expert revealed several schemes that allow stealing funds from gullible citizens.
SNILS is used in many state and financial services, including "Gosuslugi", registration in funds and registration of subsidies. Possessing this number, fraudsters gain access to more significant information. This opens up opportunities for illegal manipulations.
The first and most obvious goal of fraudsters is access to an account on the "Gosuslugi" portal. If they know your SNILS, this greatly simplifies the process of restoring or hacking an account.
Thus, fraudsters can apply for subsidies, submit false applications for state payments, and even change registration data.
Another way is to apply for microloans. Microfinance credit companies often require a minimum set of data to identify a client — sometimes a SNILS number is enough. With its help, fraudsters apply for loans, leaving the real owner of the number with debts and a spoiled credit history.
In addition, SNILS can be used to register electronic wallets or accounts in financial services. This allows fraudsters to hide their tracks when conducting illegal operations, such as money transfers, purchasing illegal goods, or participating in money laundering schemes.
Knowing the SNILS number, attackers can also calculate the level of income through pension contributions. This allows them to choose the most "profitable" victims for further attacks, including calls with threats or offers of fictitious investments.
Never follow suspicious links and do not trust strangers, even if they introduce themselves as employees of banks, government services or medical institutions. Your data is your personal resource, and only you can protect it.
