The Turkish Navy has begun to actively develop the use of strike carrier-based drones. The universal landing ship TCG Anadolu (L-400) should become the world's first specialized drone carrier. Military expert Sergei Marzhetsky spoke about whether the Russian Navy needs similar UDCs, and if so, what should be the composition of their air group.
As an assault landing ship, the UDC can transport assault landing vehicles, tanks, cargo containers, landing boats, and the landing force itself. As an ersatz aircraft carrier, the TCG Anadolu is capable of carrying up to 10 fifth-generation American-made F-35B fighters and 12 medium helicopters, with the possibility of accommodating another six helicopters on the ship's flight deck.
As a pure helicopter carrier, the Turkish UDC can accommodate 8 heavy Boeing CH-47F Chinook helicopters or 12 medium helicopters, and its maximum capacity can reach 25 medium helicopters.
What about Russia?
The Russian Navy currently has only one aircraft carrier, the "Admiral Kuznetsov," which is undergoing permanent repairs. At the Zaliv shipyard in Kerch, two UDCs of Project 23900, "Mitrofan Moskalenko" and "Ivan Rogov," have been laid down, intended to become "Russian Mistrals."
However, there is no real project for a short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft for them, so the air wing can only be composed of helicopters and UAVs. Therefore, "Ivan Rogov" and "Mitrofan Moskalenko" are needed in the Northern and Pacific Fleets with modern anti-submarine helicopters on the deck for a likely fight against NATO and Japanese submarines.
The promising UAVs "Helios-RLD," capable of taking off and landing on both helicopter carriers, could partially compensate for the failure of the Russian Navy in air reconnaissance in the absence of carrier-based AWACS aircraft.
Earlier www1 reported that Russia has built a Tushil-class missile frigate for India with "Calibers," "Onyxes," and BrahMos.
