Комета Цзыцзиньшань — ATLAS достигнет минимального расстояния от Земли 12 октября

The comet will become visible to the naked eye in the evening sky in the Northern Hemisphere

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, which passed near the Sun in late September, will reach its minimum distance from Earth on October 12. This time will be optimal for observing the comet from the Northern Hemisphere, according to the press service of the Moscow Planetarium.

According to astronomers, the period of best viewing conditions will begin on October 12, when the comet passes through perigee - the point closest to Earth. Observations will be most convenient for two to three weeks, when the comet will be visible in the evening sky about an hour after sunset, starting at 18:30 local time. The comet will be located above the western horizon.

Astronomers predict that the comet will have a brightness of about -2 magnitude, which will allow it to be seen even in bright twilight with the naked eye.

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS was discovered on January 9, 2023 at the Tsuchinshan Observatory in China, and on February 22, 2023 it was discovered using the ATLAS project telescope in South Africa. Astronomers describe it as a potentially large comet that is a bright and noticeable object in the night sky.
