Phone scammers have developed a new scheme in which they deceive Russians by informing them about a gift SIM card allegedly opened in their name. The ultimate goal of these actions is to steal funds from the victims' bank accounts. This was reported to TASS by Andrey Biichuk, product director of the "Defender" operator MTS.
Scammers introduce themselves as employees of one of the Russian mobile operators and inform the subscriber that a gift SIM card has been opened in his name with an already recorded amount, for example, 450 rubles. Biichuk noted that the attackers assure the victim that if she does not need this SIM card, then it can be closed, and the money can be withdrawn to her bank account.
After that, the scammers offer the victim to withdraw this money, but for this they need her personal data, such as full name, passport data and information about the bank card. A representative of the operator explained that the attackers may also ask you to install an application for remote access or transfer the code that comes in SMS. If the victim does not perform the specified actions immediately, the scammers threaten that the money will be lost.
Having received all the necessary data or access to accounts, phone scammers gain access to money in the victims' accounts. In this regard, MTS recommends not trusting strangers and regularly checking your bank accounts, as well as accounts with operators for suspicious transactions and attempts of unauthorized entry.
