Т-10М: советский танк мог бить на 16,5 км, но так и не вышел на поле боя

Removed from service in 1993

The T-10M heavy tank was adopted by the Soviet Army in 1957. However, unlike its peers, the light PT-76, the medium T-54 and T-55, it was never exported and did not participate in combat operations.

However, some of the machine's characteristics are still admirable to this day. In particular, the standard 122-mm rifled gun M-62T2 (2A17). Its high-explosive fragmentation shells had a maximum firing range of 16.5 km, which exceeds the capabilities of towed and self-propelled howitzers of the same caliber.

The T-10M was also armed with two 14.5-mm KPVTs, one of which was anti-aircraft, and the other was coaxial. Such powerful machine-gun armament is still not available on most modern tanks.

With a weight of 51.5 tons, these tanks had good mobility, and with a maximum speed of 53 km/h, they overtook the British Chieftain, American M48 and M60 in service.

However, the T-10M began to be massively disposed of even before their official decommissioning in 1993. Surviving specimens can be seen in Russian regions in the form of museum expositions and monuments.

Earlier it became known that Russian soldiers converted T-55, T-62 and T-72 tanks into armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles.
