Millions of cars travel on Russian roads without communication every day, said Alexey Raikevich, General Director of JSC GLONASS, at the Digital Transportation 2024 forum. Only 20% of our country's territory is covered by cellular communication, and the ERA-GLONASS system only works in the GSM zone. Satellite data transmission channels can solve the problem.
"It is extremely important for our country to ensure the possibility of transmitting an emergency signal even where there is no cellular communication. For this, satellite data transmission channels must appear. We know that such solutions have existed for quite some time, and in our country almost 100% of the market is covered by foreign operators.
The question of import substitution arises, Raikevich noted, therefore JSC GLONASS set itself the task of creating a domestic satellite data transmission channel.
"I want to proudly note that we recently completed testing of the satellite data transmission channel. And for the first time, we are starting to pilot it in the forestry industry.
The company is now implementing hybrid and satellite technologies to track objects in remote areas where there is no cellular coverage, including in forests.
In the very near future, JSC GLONASS will show how we can apply our emergency call notification platform to the category of vehicles that are often outside of cellular communication.
The head of the company explained that most of the equipment and employees in this industry are in logging areas for months without cellular communication.
The problem of the lack of satellite communication concerns not only increasing the transparency of equipment management, but also the life and health of employees in this industry.
The technology of JSC GLONASS is distinguished by the fact that it works with Russian geostationary satellites. Raikevich explained that low-orbit satellite constellations are only being formed in Russia so far.
But we are not waiting for this to be done, but today we will begin to provide for the industry. <…> Security issues cannot wait. It is necessary to solve these problems today.
Raikevich added that the Ministry of Transport of Russia and JSC GLONASS have begun testing the Federal Navigation and Information System. The project will become a new standard cloud solution on the unified digital platform GOSTECH and will be free for everyone.
The fact is that about 1.5 million vehicles in our country are tracked in real time by foreign operators, in particular by Wialon. Often the servers of this company are located outside the Russian Federation.
According to the CEO, the domestic platform will not be inferior to Wialon in terms of quality.
