The SKB-3 (part of the military-industrial holding company "Kingisepp Machine-Building Plant", KMZ) has created a new technology for manufacturing the piston of a MAN marine diesel engine. This was reported by the company's press service.
The complexity of the design lay in the stringent requirements. The finished product had to be without defects, and their correction was not allowed.
To solve this problem, we used the so-called "rain gating system". The main feature of this system is the creation of a "hot" metal mirror in the casting cavity, which promotes crystallization of the casting from the bottom up and ensures the production of dense and defect-free castings.
