Россия поручит ИИ проектирование цифровых интегральных микросхем

It would take humans tens of thousands of years to complete these tasks

The project is scheduled for 2024-2026, with several institutions involved in training AI in this area.

As reported to TASS News Agency by the Foundation for Advanced Research, the project also involves the Institute for System Programming named after V. P. Ivannikov of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, the Research Institute for System Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Malt System LLC.

The project addresses the task of creating a demonstrator of an "intelligent" system for automating the design (CAD) of digital very-large-scale integrated circuits (VLSI). Solving this task from scratch is estimated at tens of thousands of man-years and requires the involvement of highly qualified specialists in various fields: from discrete mathematics and system programming to computational methods and semiconductor physics. A much more promising approach is the development of CAD based on the open-source OpenLane route, which has proven its operability in many real projects and is constantly being improved. The project is scheduled for implementation in 2024-2026.

It is assumed that the new "intelligent" CAD will:

  • improve VLSI characteristics by 10-20%;
  • increase the productivity of the development process compared to the OpenLane route;
  • achieve optimized energy consumption and overall performance characteristics.

The creation of a Russian system for automation of design, capable of competing with commercial solutions, also implies the development of machine learning models based on supervised learning and neural networks, support for design tools for domestic technological processes, and the launch of competence centers for implementation and further technical support.
