МегаФон вызвал на подмогу 3G: оператор перераспределил нагрузку на сети без ущерба для качества связи

MegaFon is the first Russian operator to use Dynamic Spectrum Sharing technology in Russia

Mobile operator MegaFon is the first in Russia to implement Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology in Moscow, allowing the joint use of 3G and 4G frequencies. This has improved mobile internet speeds without compromising the quality of voice calls, according to the company's press service.

MegaFon engineers use Big Data to monitor the load on the cellular network, to which millions of devices connect daily. In the first quarter of 2024, almost 6 million tourists arrived in Moscow, which is 20% more than in 2019. This significantly increased mobile traffic.

To avoid overloads and efficiently use frequencies, specialists launched a refarming program, redistributing frequencies from older networks to LTE. The program has already covered more than 850 base stations in the southeast of Moscow.

However, the standard transfer of 2G and 3G networks to LTE could worsen the quality of voice calls, given the high population density and data transmission volumes. To avoid this, the company's engineers used a special technology.

DSS is capable of dynamically allocating resources between 3G and LTE networks depending on the load. If it grows in one, the base station automatically starts using the frequency resource of another network. This unique solution among Russian operators has made it possible to increase the average download speed by almost 14%, and data upload speed by 3.3%

The refarming program covers not only Moscow, but also 52 regions of the country, improving network quality and speeds for subscribers.
