The creation of a domestic PlayStation or Xbox is related to the implementation of President Vladimir Putin's order in early 2024. Several months were allocated for the development of the concept of game consoles, operating systems, and a cloud system for delivering games and programs to users. One of the first steps in this direction was most likely the prototype of a Russian portable game console running on the Aurora OS with a base on Advan x Play, which recently appeared on the Web.
Earlier it became known that a meeting with representatives of the video game industry and software developers was held in the government in mid-July on this issue. A number of publications reported this, citing their sources, the Ministry of Industry and Trade did not deny this fact, but did not disclose the details of the meeting.
Sources at Vedomosti say that the Ministry of Industry and Trade will only support devices on national platforms, and does not agree to finance projects on AOSP, the open Android platform.
According to the publication, experts believe that a device at the level of PS or Xbox needs 10 years. NTC IT Rosa, in particular, proposed its own version, estimating the necessary investments in the development of a domestic game console at 1 billion rubles. By the way, the Rosa OS runs on Linux, like the Aurora OS. However, following the meeting, it was not entirely clear what was included in the 1 billion rubles, and whether the state would be able to fully finance such a Rosa project, or only partially.
This is far from the first case this year when business is asking the state for large financial support for the implementation of import substitution projects. For example, Mikron, a subsidiary of the Element Group, recently discussed with the Ministry of Industry and Trade four projects for the development of microelectronics with a total cost of 350 billion rubles. And the Ural Multiklet asked the Russian government for 20 billion rubles for a plant for the production of high-tech RISC-V processors.
