Representatives of JSC "MCST", which developed "Elbrus", announced at a press conference the disclosure of the source codes of the Linux kernel, system libraries and compatibility patches for open source software, ensuring the operation with the platform architecture.
We have decided that we will consistently make life easier for developers, give them access to the "Elbrus" architecture. That is, we will gradually update this database of source codes, post new packages that we ourselves have transferred to the "Elbrus" platform, give the opportunity to download various development tools, we are preparing them now. And, in general, our goal is to make "Elbrus" one of the world's architectures supported by the open source community.
Simply put, open source codes mean that "Elbrus" becomes a kind of public constructor, fragments of which can be viewed, supplemented and copied for use in your projects. At the same time, developers who want to use "Elbrus" are no longer required to pay "MCST" for a license.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade says that this initiative is"welcomed". According to Vladimir Dozhdev, Director of the Department of Digital Technologies of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, now Russian developers will be able to quickly create a full-fledged, fully functional software and hardware stack. Moreover, this applies to"applications for transport, and to all areas of critical information infrastructure - energy, chemistry, metallurgy, other areas."
Currently, Russia producesa number of motherboards with the installation of Russian-made "Elbrus" processors for dozens of types of domestic equipment. "Elbrus" can be found inATMs and microcomputers, they are actively used where it is necessary to ensure cybersecurity - at critical information infrastructure facilities, large enterprises, in law enforcement agencies.
