Modernization and construction of new research vessels (RVs) are necessary for researching Russia's southern seas — the Black, Azov, and Caspian Seas, stated the scientific director of the Southern Scientific Center (SSC) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gennady Matishov.
It is advisable [for researching the southern seas of the Russian Federation] to modernize and build economical vessels useful for the academy and, probably, the naval fleet [research vessels of the RAS fleet — ed. note] with a displacement of 1-1.5 thousand tons. At least, less will not work for the Black and Caspian Seas. Research is impossible without a fleet - it needs both small and large vessels.
The statement was made at the International Scientific Conference «Strategic Problems, Threats, and Risks of the Azov Basin and the Azov Region», which is taking place in Rostov-on-Don.
Matishov noted that the availability of such vessels affects research, including those related to climate change. In his opinion, «the Azov Sea is an ideal testing ground for studying fluctuations in the world ocean». Among the existing RVs in southern Russia, he named the vessels «Professor Vodyanitsky» (1976), «Professor Panov» (1986), «Ashamba» (1979), «Deneb» (1993).
Matishov also emphasized the importance of modernizing existing stations in Golubaya Bay, Gelendzhik. «We have many stations [in Golubaya Bay] both on the coast and on land, and they need to be modernized», he noted.
