An agreement has been signed for the construction of the first branch of the Moscow – St. Petersburg high-speed railway (HSR-1). This was announced by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
The project will improve the quality of life and stimulate the growth of tourism. Travel time from Moscow to St. Petersburg will be reduced. The 679 km journey will take 2 hours and 15 minutes – half the time it takes on the Sapsan train.
The 40-year agreement involves the creation of high-speed rail transport infrastructure between the country's two largest megacities, as well as the development of high-speed trains.
The authorities plan to increase passenger traffic between the two cities by 3.2 times. It is expected that the annual figure will reach 32 million people by 2030.
It is worth noting that a model of the high-speed railway was presented this year at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-24). The total length of all HSR tracks is 4671 km, and trains will run on them at speeds of 200 to 400 km/h.
