The Russian Aerospace Forces are armed with the long-range supersonic missile-carrying bomber with variable sweep wings, the Tu-22M3. It is designed to destroy land and sea targets with aerial bombs and guided missiles and is a carrier of missiles, conventional and nuclear bombs.
The Tu-22M series aircraft are designed according to an aerodynamic configuration with a low-mounted variable sweep wing. The aircraft structure is mainly made of aluminum alloys, as well as heat-resistant and high-strength steels, magnesium and titanium alloys.
The wing consists of rotating consoles and a fixed part. The sweep angle of the rotating consoles ranges from 20° to 65°. The wing mechanization includes three-section double-slotted flaps and slats. Interceptors deflect synchronously for use as an aerodynamic brake and differentially for roll control. The stabilizer is all-moving.
The aircraft has a tricycle retractable landing gear with a nose strut and a semi-monocoque fuselage. The power plant consists of two NK-25 turbofan engines.
In 2018, as part of a large-scale program to modernize strategic and long-range aviation complexes, the first deeply modernized missile-carrying bomber, the Tu-22M3M, was created.
As a result of the deep modernization, the aircraft was equipped with a new complex of modern digital radio-electronic equipment (avionics) based on a domestic element base.
The result of the work was a significant expansion of the combat potential of the aviation complex, including an increase in combat radius and an increase in combat effectiveness.
The first flight of the deeply modernized missile-carrying bomber Tu-22M3M was performed on December 28, 2018.
