The Project 23550 "Arktika" ship can carry a helicopter on board

The first combat icebreaker "Ivan Papanin" of Project 23550 (code "Arktika"), built at the "Admiralty Shipyards" in St. Petersburg, has started sea trials. The Department of Information and Mass Communications of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that during these tests, the operation of the propulsion system and onboard equipment systems will be checked. The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Alexander Moiseev, was informed about the ship's readiness for testing at a working meeting at the Admiralty.

The crew of the icebreaker "Ivan Papanin" has completed comprehensive training at the Joint Training Center of the Navy, where training exercises were conducted on the operation of equipment and weapons of ships of this project in Arctic conditions. During the training, training complexes were used to practice various tasks as part of ship combat crews.

After the completion of all tests, the icebreaker will join the Russian Navy and will serve in the Northern Fleet. Ships of Project 23550 are being built both for the Russian Navy and for the naval units of the Border Guard Service of the FSB of Russia (in this case, they are coded "Ermak" and are being built at the Vyborg Shipyard). These multifunctional ice-class ships are capable of overcoming ice up to 1.7 meters thick.

The armament of the icebreaker for the Russian Navy is expected to include a 76.2-mm artillery mount, as well as the possible placement of eight Kalibr-K cruise missiles and/or Uran anti-ship missiles in two container launchers. In addition, the icebreaker is capable of carrying a helicopter, which makes it a versatile and multi-purpose ship.

Project 23550 was developed to ensure maritime security in the Arctic regions, where the ability of ships to overcome ice and ensure the performance of combat and patrol tasks is extremely important. The first combat icebreaker "Ivan Papanin" will become an important part of the Northern Fleet and will contribute to strengthening Russia's position in the Arctic.

The displacement of the combat icebreaker "Ivan Papanin" is 9,000 tons. It can cover distances of up to 10,000 nautical miles at a speed of 10 knots. The ship has a crew of 60 people, which allows the ship to be at sea autonomously for up to 70 days.
