Russia is working on new titanium ore enrichment technologies that will help reduce the cost of the resulting titanium concentrate.
This was reported to IA «TASS» by Evgeny Petrov, Head of Rosnedra.
In recent years, we have conducted a very large audit of technological cycles. Indeed, Russia has colossal reserves of titanium — about 580 million tons of titanium dioxide. This is 15% of the world's reserves, but in our country, titanium deposits are characterized by complex ores containing metal.
According to him, the Geotechnological Center has been working on extraction technologies for these cases since 2021. Based on the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Mineral Raw Materials named after N. M. Fedorovsky (FSBI «VIMS»), it is working to reduce the cost of production at all stages of the technological chain: from extraction to the final product.
By government decree, titanium is classified as a strategic and scarce type of mineral raw material. According to data from open sources, Russia's current need for titanium products is about 450 thousand tons. Taking into account the development of domestic aircraft construction, the chemical industry, and a number of other industries, the titanium market will grow, and, according to various forecasts, the need for it may grow to 800-850 thousand tons.
Earlier this year, the mining division of «Rosatom» presented a new domestic technology for extracting rare earth metals from loparite concentrate. As a result of the application of this technology, the country receives its niobium, tantalum, titanium, cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, praseodymium, and a concentrate of the medium-heavy group of rare earth elements, and becomes import-independent from their supplies.
