Russian Websites Will Remove Login Buttons Using Google and Apple ID from December 1st

Deputies of the lower house of the Russian parliament, during a plenary session, adopted in the first reading a draft law concerning the control of authorization systems. In particular, Russian websites and applications (with foreign participation) must remove login buttons using Google and Apple ID from December 1st, stated State Duma deputy Anton Gorelkin.

According to the parliamentarian, the State Duma unanimously supported this initiative. It is noted that a transition period to new authorization systems is simultaneously established until January 1, 2025.

It was assumed that the changes would come into force on December 1, 2023, but after discussions with market representatives, it became clear that not all digital platforms would have time to prepare and begin complying with the new law within the established timeframe, Gorelkin explained.

It is worth recalling that in July 2023, amendments were adopted to 149-FZ ("On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection"). Now users can log in to websites and applications using a Russian mobile operator's number, through Gosuslugi, a biometric system (UBS), or a service controlled by a Russian IT company.

Earlier it was reported that more than ten foreign companies, including Google, are threatened with large fines for refusing to localize data about Russian users. This is a violation of current Russian legislation.
