Scientific Research Automotive and Motor Institute ("NAMI") has developed a draft GOST standard for converting conventional cars with internal combustion engines into electric cars. The draft standard defines the standards and requirements for this conversion.

According to the new standard, if the car has been successfully converted into an electric car and has passed certification, the manufacturer will have the right to release such a model on an industrial scale, Alexander Sorokin, a representative of "Avtotor Holding", told "Gazeta.ru" in an interview today.

The task standard has currently been submitted to the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), which coordinates the economic integration of the member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). After the EEC adopts this standard, it will become official and regulate the conversion of regular cars into electric cars in the EAEU member countries.

In March of this year, "Avtotor" announced the start of a pilot project to convert used cars with internal combustion engines into electric cars at its plant in Kaliningrad. Then, Alexander Shcherbakov, the main owner of "Avtotor", said that the declared cost of re-engining one car at mass launch can fit into 1000 euros. But without state support, this project is considered very expensive.

The re-engining project, according to Avtotor, will eliminate the problem of searching for scarce spare parts for foreign cars.
