The Russian Tu-214 and the American Boeing 757-200 belong to the same class of narrow-body medium-haul aircraft. They are similar in size, weight, and passenger capacity and are seen as competitors on air routes.

"Pervy Tekhnichesky" compared the airliners based on five key characteristics.

Capacity

The Tu-214 is designed for a maximum of approximately 210 passengers. The Boeing 757-200, in a dense single-class configuration, can carry up to 239 people, and in a typical two-class configuration, about 200.

This gives the American aircraft a greater margin in passenger capacity, although in real-world operation, the difference depends on the cabin layout. Here, the Boeing 757 looks better.

Commercial Payload

The Russian airliner can carry up to 25.2 tons of commercial payload. The Boeing 757-200 has a figure of about 22.6 tons, so the Tu-214 gains an advantage of approximately 2.6 tons.

For cargo-passenger flights, this allows the Russian aircraft to carry more useful load without increasing the maximum takeoff weight. The "Tushka" evens the score.

Range

The maximum range of the Tu-214, depending on the configuration, reaches approximately 6500–6700 km. The Boeing 757-200 can cover up to 7200–7250 km, and the difference is about 600 km.

This is especially important for routes where the aircraft needs to fly long distances without an intermediate stop. Airlines will obviously choose the American aircraft for such routes.

Speed

The cruising speed of both aircraft is approximately at the same level — about 850 km/h.

Therefore, on the same route, the difference in flight time will be small, and there is no significant advantage of one airliner over the other in this parameter. We declare a logical draw.

Fuel Consumption

The Tu-214 is equipped with two PS-90A engines, each with a thrust of about 16 tf, and consumption is estimated at approximately 3.4–3.7 tons of fuel per hour. The Boeing 757-200 with RB211-535 or PW2000 engines consumes about 3.2–3.3 tons/hour.

With comparable loading, the American airliner is more fuel-efficient, which directly affects the cost of each flight, adding a point to its score.

Final score — 3:1 in favor of the Boeing 757.

In this comparison, the "757" wins. Although the Tu-214 takes the commercial payload — 25.2 vs. 22.6 tons — the Boeing turns out to be more spacious, has a longer range, and is more fuel-efficient. In terms of speed, the aircraft are practically equal.

At the same time, the maximum takeoff weight of the Tu-214 is about 110.7 tons, while the Boeing 757-200 is up to 115.7 tons.
