How Russia Can Protect Airbases from Drones and SCALP-EG Missiles: A Comprehensive Approach Needed

Military Expert Highlights the Need to Develop AEW&C Airships to Protect Refineries and Airbases from Drones

To establish effective air defense (AD) over strategically important facilities within Russia, it is necessary to create a comprehensive defense system with Podlet-K1 radar stations and long-range radar detection and control (AEW&C) airships. This was stated by military analyst Evgeny Damantsev.

He noted that no missile and drone-hazardous direction can guarantee the absence of "blind spots" through which drone routes will pass, without deploying dozens of Podlet-K1 radars and 92N6 illumination radars at a distance of 50-60 km from each other on the terrain.

Damantsev clarified that currently, the radar contour of the Russian Aerospace Forces in the low-altitude sector is a "farmstead" structure. In it, positional areas of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) scattered several hundred kilometers apart form only a zonal-objective air defense system.

At this time, "blind spots" stretching for hundreds of kilometers at altitudes of 30-300 m allow kamikaze drones and SCALP-EG missiles to travel 700-1300 km and attack individual oil refineries (refineries) and airbases in entire formations of 15-50 units.

New Air Defense System

Damantsev noted that the development of AEW&C airships with high-energy AESA S/X-band radars is relevant. The devices are capable of operating around the clock in missile-hazardous directions, detecting air attack weapons with an RCS of 0.1-0.03 m² at a distance of 130-200 km, and transmitting their coordinates to the Buk-M3 or S-350A SAM systems for over-the-horizon interception.

Airship operators will be able to issue target coordinates to both Su-35S fighters and Ka-52M attack helicopter squadrons, the analyst emphasized.

Su-35S crews will be able to engage both UAVs and JASSM-ER or SCALP-EG cruise missiles with R-74M and R-77-1 missiles. At the same time, Ka-52M navigators will be able to easily intercept A-22 and Lyuty-type kamikaze drones with Vikhr-1 missiles at a distance of about 7-8 km.
