Destroyer Project 23560 could have become an asymmetric response to the American Aegis missile defense system

Previously, Russia was developing a project for a promising destroyer of project 23560 "Leader", which was supposed to replace several classes of ships in the Russian Navy (Navy) at once. The warship could have received a shipborne version of the S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) and become a response to the American Aegis shipborne missile defense system (ABM), said military expert Sergei Marzhetsky.

The ship's full displacement was 19 thousand tons. It was he who could have become the owner of the naval-based S-500 air defense system, since it would be problematic to install such large anti-missiles in the ships of project 22350 with their universal launchers without prejudice to the main purpose of the frigates, Marzhetsky noted.

However, this promising project turned out to be too technically complex and expensive, so it was shelved. According to the most conservative estimates, the cost of one destroyer with a nuclear power plant started from 100 billion rubles. For sure, in the end, it would have cost as much as the modernization of Admiral Nakhimov due to inevitable shifts in deadlines to the right and an increase in the estimate. There were also serious questions about the integration of Prometheus, which was still under development and testing, into the hull of project 23560, which remained in the form of an exhibition model.

Ships equipped with the naval-based S-500 complex could shoot down intercontinental ballistic missiles launched from strategic-class submarines immediately after their launch, the expert emphasized.

At the same time, Prometheus is able to reach even the Grumman E-2 Hawkeye deck aircraft, which are able to "see" cruise missiles from a distance of 258 km.

Instead of the "Leaders", the bet is now quite reasonably placed on destroyers of project 22350M of increased displacement as the future main "workhorse" of the fleet, but they will not be carriers of the S-500.

The key components of the Aegis missile defense system are the SM-3 Standard family of shipborne anti-missiles and the AN/SPY-1 radar station. The maximum range of the SM-3 Block IB is 700 km, the speed is 3 km/s.
