The Russian military may receive a new modification of the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) with a promising multi-purpose tactical quasi-ballistic missile capable of striking ground targets. This was announced by military analyst Yevgeny Damantsev.
The expert recalled that the 5V55R anti-aircraft guided missiles (SAMs) from the early modification of the S-300PS SAM system had the ability to engage ground targets using a radio command guidance method with target coordinate comparison.
The capture of surface radio-emitting targets was ensured by the software adaptation of the 5V55R missile homing heads in passive mode.
The new quasi-ballistic missile for the S-400 SAM system can be developed on the basis of the improved 48N6DM SAM with a hypersonic maximum flight speed of up to 2600 m/s and an trajectory apogee of up to 57-65 km. The range of such a product in SAM mode is 250 km, while in ballistic missile mode it can reach 450-550 km with a speed in the terminal section of the trajectory of about 750 - 950 m/s.
The analyst noted that the guidance system of the 48N6DM SAM is more advanced than that of the 5V55R SAM due to the presence of a modern digital inertial-navigation unit and a GLONASS correction module with interference-protected antennas of the "Cometa-A" type.
S-400 "Triumph" SAM system
The S-400 SAM system has been in service with the Russian army since 2007. It includes a combat control center, a radar complex, a transport-launching unit, a radar station and other optional means.
The S-400 is capable of hitting aerodynamic targets at a distance of 2.5 to 380 km and an altitude of 10 m to 30 km.
Earlier www1.ru reported that Russia has developed the latest AI sight for the AK-12 with the GPR-20 grenade launcher.
