Thermal Imager Becomes Crucial Tool for Soldiers in Night Combat

Russian snipers' rifles are capable of hitting targets located behind building walls, according to the Ministry of Defense.

This is made possible by the caliber of the standard weaponry. Another essential tool for snipers is the thermal imager, which allows them to locate targets at night and in fog.

The ministry added that snipers can operate as free hunters, scouts, or spotters, and can stop the advance of enemy armored vehicles and manpower.

Snipers also cover the crews of automatic grenade launchers firing on enemy positions, which are adjusted and directed by a combat observer.

The Soviet SVD, which was adopted by the army in 1963, is still widely used in Russian sniper units.

SVD Characteristics:

  • Caliber — 7.62 mm
  • Number of grooves — 4
  • Sighting range with optical sight/with open sight — 1300/1200 m
  • Initial bullet velocity — 830 m/s
  • Bullet range up to which its lethal effect is maintained — 3800 m

Earlier, www1.ru reported that the STM-308 sniper rifle was developed for the Russian military. It allows engaging targets at a distance of 800m, and an experienced sniper — up to 1 km.
